Task 4 - Methodologies and tools for solving complex problems: soft systems, dialogue mapping, IBIS, satisficing.

The issue that I identified was that I have successful in gaining a place at Curtin University's Ignition Program for entrepreneur's which Is a week long course commencing next week which I wanted to attend. The main issue I had was time management considering I am a full time MBA student and also a single Dad. Another unforeseen issue is that my Mum has recently had an eye operation and has asked me assist her with doctors appointments.

I have selected Barry Winmar to assist me with this issue using De-Bono's six thinking hats problem solving tool. I am utilising De-Bono's Six Thinking Hats because there is a major need globally for creative, constructive thinking help plan the future (De-Bono 2007).

White Hat (Facts)
  •  I am a single Dad.
  •  I have 2 kids there ages are 7 and 9.
  •  My Mum has health problems.
  •  I have been accepted into the Curtin Ignition which is week long course commencing 04/09/2016.

Red Hat (Feelings)
I was beginning to feel apprehensive stressed and apprehensive. I was feeling this way because of my obligations to my MBA, Ignition and family. As I discussed with Barry Winmar it became clear that I was trying to juggle competing priorities with time constraints on each of them.

Black Hat ( Judgement. Caution)
I was concerned of my study falling behind as my priority has been completing my MBA this semester and then entering the workforce. Another issue I was cautious about was my children getting enough attention. Then I had to consider Mums care and attention. I was also wary of how the Ignition program would judge me as to withdrawing from the course after a lot of effort gaining entry.

Yellow Hat (Benefits)
Finishing the MBA would definitely be beneficial to me. Also attending Ignition will be an opportunity to invest in myself as Barry pointed out. Helping Mum recover was also a factor.

Green (Creativity)
Barry and I then discussed how I could accommodate  all of these competing interests to come up with a solution. We then put forward list of points of how to create a favourable outcome as follows:

  • Speak to Ignition.
  • Speak to my lecturers.
  • Speak to the school principal.
  • Speak to my extended family.
  • Speak to fellow students.
Blue Hat (Process)

In discussion with Barry new have formulated a process of working through competing priorities. We have created a schedule that will enable me to attend the Ignition course whilst working through competing priorities.

Another process from our discussions was to complete my assignment quicker so that I will not extra time to accommodate the other competing interested.
