Task 4 - Methodologies and tools for solving complex problems: soft systems, dialogue mapping, IBIS, satisficing.
- I am a single Dad.
- I have 2 kids there ages are 7 and 9.
- My Mum has health problems.
- I have been accepted into the Curtin Ignition which is week long course commencing 04/09/2016.
I was beginning to feel apprehensive stressed and apprehensive. I was feeling this way because of my obligations to my MBA, Ignition and family. As I discussed with Barry Winmar it became clear that I was trying to juggle competing priorities with time constraints on each of them.
I was concerned of my study falling behind as my priority has been completing my MBA this semester and then entering the workforce. Another issue I was cautious about was my children getting enough attention. Then I had to consider Mums care and attention. I was also wary of how the Ignition program would judge me as to withdrawing from the course after a lot of effort gaining entry.
Finishing the MBA would definitely be beneficial to me. Also attending Ignition will be an opportunity to invest in myself as Barry pointed out. Helping Mum recover was also a factor.
Barry and I then discussed how I could accommodate all of these competing interests to come up with a solution. We then put forward list of points of how to create a favourable outcome as follows:
- Speak to Ignition.
- Speak to my lecturers.
- Speak to the school principal.
- Speak to my extended family.
- Speak to fellow students.
In discussion with Barry new have formulated a process of working through competing priorities. We have created a schedule that will enable me to attend the Ignition course whilst working through competing priorities.
Another process from our discussions was to complete my assignment quicker so that I will not extra time to accommodate the other competing interested.

Having just read the blog from Barry on this same issue it was insightful as a reader to gather more information and understand the underlying problems first hand from the subject in question. The nominated problem solving tool for this situation being De Bono's six hats, again worked accordingly and the author has itemised the facts well under the required categories. By doing so it appears that a positive outcome has been able to be established for Graeme without hindering any of the other important factors in his life. It was a privilege to be given a small glimpse into what seems to be an incredible story of motivation, determination and sheer willpower to become the best human he can be for his family. For that I commend you on your ability and drive, you are an inspiration to all not just fellow students. Nothing is easy in life and if you want it bad enough Graeme, you WILL achieve it. Thanks & good luck.

Graeme's blog relates to a process of elimination to consider an appropriate decision making tool to establish a pathway and focus on achieving a resolution with a methodical approach. The issue revolved around a situation and we ascertained the most suitable approach was utilising De Bono's six hat's. I also felt comfortable using this tool as indicated in my blog I was comfortable and confident in the tool to achieve a positive outcome. In this instance we used Graeme's scenario to apply De Bono's model. When you consider the facts and executing a process, which we did on butchers paper, we were clearly able to map out an approach for Graeme to be in a situation of stretch whilst being cognisant of the relevance of importance of all the facts. The result of the session clearly outlined a plan for Graeme to achieve all his objectives in a rational and methodical manner. It was also an opportunity for me to reflect on my personal journey this semester confident in my ability to achieve both Graeme's and my ambition of graduating this year with an ECU MBA.
